Reading
the Bible
One
of our church's values is Biblical
learning that equips all ages for everyday living.
Full
biblical understanding only happens where Word & World speak
to each other by the Spirit. Relevant teaching and personal study,
alongside learning how to apply the Bible well, are essential if
we are each to grow and retain 'saltiness'.
It
is good to be able to learn and recall passages from the bible and
this year, our aim is that every member of the congregation will
be able to memorise a verse
a month.
To help you get to grips with the Bible, there are various study
notes which you can order via the church office (01483 473489) from
Scripture
Union and CWR.
Alternatively, Scripture Union offer a multi-media bible experience
on their website WordLive
which allows you to receive a daily podcast, e-mail, RSS feed or
download to your mobile phone!
This
Autumn, we'll be starting a teaching series looking at the 10 Must
Know Bible Stories, taking advantage of the Scripture Union
books of the same name. We'll be starting with Adam and Eve, Noah's
Ark, Daniel in the Lion's Den and Birth in Bethlehem and we hope
it will be a way of restoring understanding of the importance of
10 key stories in the Bible - 10 stories that have been voted on
as essential to our culture and which teachers and parents feel
must not be lost to the next generation.
An
understanding of Bible story is essential to so much of our culture,
literature, history, language
Bible references are woven
into the fabric of our national, artistic and literary heritage.
The tabloids talk of a 'David and Goliath encounter' on the football
pitch, a 'Damascus Road experience', a 'lions' den' situation or
an 'exodus' of skilled workers. People talk of the need for 'the
wisdom of Solomon' or their longing for 'the return of the prodigal'.
But increasing Bible illiteracy means we are losing real understanding
of such terms.
We
will be taking orders in church for the Scripture Union books which
been written to connect with todays culture the David
and Goliath story is written from the perspective of Goliath, a
binge-drinking celebrity and the Adam and Eve story is full of seduction
and suspicion. You can find out more about the books for the different
age groups from the Scripture
Union website, at prices starting from £3.99.
As
well as individual bible study, it's good to get together with others
to be inspired and encouraged, learning from God together. Why not
find out about one of our midweek
home groups which meet at regularl intervals in various homes
around the parish?
At
your desk and don't have your bible to hand and want to look something
up? Bible Gateway is a great resource tool which allows you to search
many different translations of the bible - the search tool below
